what is SMTE?
The Society for Music Teacher Education was founded in 1982 and is open to those members of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) with a particular interest in music teacher education.
Checking the “teacher education” interest area on the NAfME membership form establishes membership in the Society for Music Teacher Education.
Also known as Areas for Strategic Planning and Action, These twelve action groups have been created to develop and implement action plans related to current critical issues in music teacher education.
The goal of our biennial conference is to sustain professional conversations and collaborative action while challenging our profession to imagine possibilities for the future of music education.

Help us collect data so we may provide a forum for discussion on issues related to the evaluation of music teachers, including the evaluation of pre-service and in-service teachers.
Members of the Executive Board, Journal of Music Teacher Education Editorial Committee, and regional chairs can be found here.
We invite SMTE members to identify with one or more ASPAs, contribute via the web-based discussion forums, and participate in ASPA projects.
